Take a scenic drive
The Mary Valley scenic drive rewards drivers with a landscape patch-worked with grazing cattle, macadamia farms, rainforests and endless rolling hills.
Don't forget to stop at the Imbil Lookout, just across town at the top of Elizabeth Street, which presents incomparable near 360 degree views of Imbil, the mountains and across to Kenilworth and the Sunshine Coast.
Ride the Mary Valley Rattler
A true piece of local history, the iconic Mary Valley Rattler re-opened in 2018, taking visitors on a steam train journey from Gympie through to Dagun and Amamoor. The trains, tracks, and station buildings have been restored to their former glory, and you can even purchase a bottle of wine and a cheese platter to enjoy aboard the carriage as you gently travel through the scenic countryside and across the Mary River and into the Valley.
Farms, markets and local produce
Stroll across the bridge to the main street in Imbil every Sunday to the Imbil Sunday Market offering handmade bread, fruit and vegetables, plants and seedlings, essential oils, jewellery, pet treats and local crafts.
Walks and trails
Imbil’s ‘Timber Cutters Walk’ is centrally located in the town’s parkland area and meanders through age-old jacaranda trees down to Yabba Creek.
The Amamoor State Forest is a nature lover’s paradise. You can either drive through the forest or take a leisurely walk along the many creekside trails including the 300-metre ‘Platypus Walk’, and 30-minute ‘Rainforest Walk’. Finish your stroll with a cool dip in the Amamoor Creek’s swimming hole.
You’ll find the charming Fig Tree walk 6.5 km south of Kenilworth on the Kenilworth–Maleny Road. This easy 1.1 km return wheelchair-friendly walk explores the riverine rainforest near the junction of Little Yabba Creek and the Mary River.
Mary Valley Country is one of the best horse-riding locations in South- East Queensland, offering horse riders a network of trails and tracks to explore the forests and national parks.
Water sports
Kayak the beautiful Mary River, Yabba Creek or Lake Borumba and take in the breathtaking scenery. Hire kayaks or bikes and explore the forest and waterfalls with Ride on Mary, who offer guided or self-guided tours and hire equipment.
Borumba Dam offers over 480 hectares of waterways for swimming, fishing, kayaking and waterskiing. The dam is host to a number of annual fishing events so fish stocks are full all year round. If you have a boat, bring it along for waterskiing on the dam's clear water, or just take it easy with a picnic on the shore and the occasional dip.
